The Rock climbing area Vernante in the Maritime
Alps is great, located near the French border and near the rock climbing
area Andonno. You will find those
Limestone crags embedded in greenery near Limone Piemonte, a well established
ski resort, and the crag offers good climbing in various grades.
Easy
and fast access to 140 sport climbing routes and together with Andonno,
just 15 minutes drive from these crags, this area offers almost 400 climbing
routes and a lot of traditional climbing (in the "Valle Gesso", Madre di
Dio, Nasta and Catena del CAI).
This
region of Italy is different than most of what we have seen, not exploited
in the same way as many other regions, still you will find a lot of space,
genuine villages and not many tourists, a fantastic scenery with several
peaks reaching more than 3000 meters, and of course the Natural Park, one
of the largest in Italy.
Except
for rock climbing and bouldering the area offers a lot of alternatives for
resting days, as beautiful nature and perfect conditions for other activities;
Mountain Bike, Hiking, Canoeing, Sci Alpinismo and Fishing. For exclusive
resting, choose to enjoy the beneficial thermal waters of the Valdieri Spa or take the car down to the Mediterranean Sea over a day
(about 1,5 hours drive).
Some
serious heavy rock climbing has been done here, and you will find a handful
of routes graded harder than 8a+, and the rest of the climbing in various
grades for each climbing level. The crag Gevernour offers a beautiful environment
with stone bridges and a brook to cool down after a day at the crag.
We
where tempted to use superlative for this rock climbing region but didn't;
we might find areas with the same, or even better conditions. However, climbing
holidays in Andonno / Vernante is
recommended.
