Mountaineering
Dent d'Hérens, 4179 m
The normal route and the East ridge, is the easy
route's to the summit, but to reach the foot of the crag you need to pass a big glacier with many crevasses.
If you are heading for the summit, be shore of good weather since the mountain in bad
weather can be very dangerous. Dent d'Hérens is a very beautiful mountain just close to Matterhorn, but the described access is from the valley Valpelline.
From the car park you will see the summit.
On the border Switzerland/Italy the Matterhorn dominates the area, East you find the Monte Rosa massif, and West the beautiful Dent d'Hérens. Maybe because the other mountain's is so close the Dent d'Hérens don't attract so many, but it offers great mountaineering/ski mountaineering.
Visitors
in general use two days for the ascent. The first afternoon with the long walk
from Place Moulin to the hut Aosta at 2781 m. Then early next day start the harder
part to ascend the summit, including a long walk over a broken glacier with several passages over bridges in ice.
Usually it is surprisingly cold as you get closer to the top, winter gear is needed, crampons, axe and of course helmet; stone-fall is an ever-present threat, especially on the normal route.
In
the Topos you will find all necessary information for the ascent, with pictures,
information and detailed maps.
